GLASSBORO, NJ, April 29, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ — Steve Plevins has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After nearly 40 years of excellence as a Recreation Director for the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation in Maryland and the Vineland Children’s Residential Treatment Center in Vineland, New Jersey, Mr. Plevins has flourished as a Marketing Director with the Salvation Army Vineland Corps in New Jersey since 2010. Through the aforementioned non-profit organization, he has successfully helped others build their resumes and acquire jobs while also participating in food drives to raise money for families in need. Thanks to the assistance of grants, he has also been able to continue paying the utility bills and the rent, which has kept the store open for business during very trying times. After 10 years with The Salvation Army, Mr. Plevins has raised approximately $250,000, though he hopes to do much more including building an on-site gymnasium for their after-school programs.
Fostering a career that has been devoted to helping inner city youth, Mr. Plevins was employed by Prince George’s County, Maryland from 1972 to 1981. He raised $250,000 of grant money at this position. During this tenure, he was instrumental in building more than 10 recreation centers throughout the county by utilizing a recreation tax, which drastically reduced the local crime rate. He subsequently relocated to New Jersey, where he was able to establish a behavior modification program for kids which rewarded good behavior with concert and sporting event trips. Mr. Plevins also introduced children to such non-profit organizations as Habitat for Humanity as to better learn about contributing to their communities.
Having participated in many athletic competitions in high school, Mr. Plevins found success as the Program Director for a local park in Prince George’s County. This opportunity later opened the door to his position as a Recreation Director for the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation. Mr. Plevins notably obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations with a minor in government from the University of Maryland.
A large amount of professional athletes came from Prince George’s County, Maryland. Sugar Ray Leonard received a Gold Medal at 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Other athletes include Adrian Dantley and Len Bias. ESPN did a special on large amount of athletes in Prince George’s County.
Mr. Plevins got approval from the State of New Jersey Department of Children and Families for residents (preferred more violent youth and gang members) to meet with professional boxers in Atlantic City. Mr. Plevins recruited the following boxers to take part: Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, and George Foreman. This was a successful part of each child’s rehabilitation package.
In addition to his primary responsibilities, Mr. Plevins has been involved in various civic initiatives, including having been appointed by the Governor to a local board to make recommendations on how to deal with troubled youth. His success has been recognized with a Gold Medal Recreation Award from the National Recreation and Park Administration. Mr. Plevins also accepted a Power of Positivity Award and the William Booth Award from The Salvation Army, which is the highest international award from the aforementioned organization.
Mr. Plevins received a Point of Light Award from George H. W. Bush for his community work. He also received a President of the United States Lifetime Achievement Award from President Obama.
