After receiving a Bachelor of Science in political science from the City College of New York and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Pepperdine University School of Law, Ms. Wood began her career as a lawyer and public defender in New Mexico. She soon became aware of the sanctuary movement in El Salvador, wherein people were fleeing from persecution in their home country. Having been moved by a poem she read about an El Salvadorian prison camp, Ms. Wood resolved to switch her career focus.
As a lawyer, Ms. Wood took on a case in Los Angeles representing a man who was placed in El Salvadorian camp. Achieving victory in this cause, she went on to continue fighting for refugees and asylum seekers throughout her career. Presently, Ms. Wood works through her own office, the Law Offices of Judith L. Wood and serves as an immigration lawyer and director of the Human Rights Project.
Ms. Wood has been admitted to practice in the state of New Mexico, in the Ninth and 10th circuits and in the Fifth, Fourth, Third, Second and Eighth district courts. In her current position, she writes appellate briefs, delivers oral arguments and represents litigants in immigration cases. In addition to her primary professional duties, Ms. Wood has offered her expertise to the field as the author of numerous articles to professional journals. To wit, she has written on immigration law, political asylum and human rights. In addition to “The Case for Silence,” a book she is currently writing, she has already authored “The Right to Aslyum” in Los Angeles Lawyer.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Wood has been most proud of all her victories in the Court of Appeals. She has worked tirelessly to help open the door for women fleeing violence and seeking refuge in the United States. Most notably, Ms. Wood was the subject of “Saint Judy,” a movie starring Michelle Monaghan and Alfred Molina.
Dedicated to lifting the burden of others, Ms. Wood is most proud of her role in persuading judges to finally grant her clients asylum. In this capacity, she attributes her standout success to her Christian faith, which has always taught her to serve others and be a blessing in their lives. She maintains her professional affiliation with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the board of directors of the New Mexico State Bar. Looking toward the future, Ms. Wood plans to continue helping others in their own fight for justice.
